My ISP disconnects my service automatically every two
hours. If I am downloading Windows Updates, the service
will normally recover itself on reconnection and carry on
from where it left off. However, although this is
normally the case when a set of relatively small updates
are being downloaded as a group, when an attempt was made
to download Office XP Sevice Pack 2 the estimated download
time was 350 mins on my 56K connection (broadband is still
a distant hope, here). On disconnecting, after about 12
Mb of the 44.7Mb!!! Service Pack had been received, the
download recommenced from the beginning and did so every
time the process was repeated. The conclusion, therefore,
was that there was no way to download this service pack,
nor, possibly, many other monolithic files of a size
exceeding 10 or 15Mb. I have had to request the Service
Pack on CD, which will solved the current problem but it
could be more serious in other circumstances.
I have, in the past used a download manager (Gozilla) but
found that it would not take control of Windows Update
downloads. This looks like a bit of a Catch 22 situation.
Anyone got any ideas for a way around it?
