Windows thinks USB2.0 ports are USB 1

I have an Intel 865GLC MB. This came with (and I have checked the AA rev
number with Intel) 4x USB2.0 ports. I have enabled the High Speed option in
Bios and have SP2 installed, but windows insists they are USB1.

Under DevMan it lists them as Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller
- 24D2 with the other 3 being 24D4, 24D7 and 24DE.

I know these ports are USB2 but I also nkow that the device windows believes
it has found is a USB1. I have tried in vain with Intel who suggested I try
MS. I have updated drivers to no avail and I do have all the latest inf's
from Intel for this MB.

Any help would be fantastic.

Idris

Hi

Thanks for your reply, but as I said I have tried all the latest inf files.
The problem seems to be that windows is insistent that it has found the
correct hardware and refuses any other driver saying the device will not
start (code 10).

I know the MB ports are USB2 but the device listing is a USB1. Windows
seems adament that it is right. I am determined not to be beaten by this
though, so any other help by any would be really welcomed.

Many thanks
Idris

If you can take the time to jot it down and post back, go to Device
Manager, Click View, tic "Show Hidden Devices". Expand the USB
controllers category. Check for any "Phantoms", devices shown in a
slightly diminished tone or grayed out. There should be a total of 5
active controllers, a single "Enhanced" and 4 standard USB1(.1) type.

You can also try checking the Bios and make sure the USB ports are set
to high speed instead of full speed, or 2.0 instead of 1.1. I've found
this to be the problem before.

Hi,

I had previously mentioned that I had checked the Bios setting but thanks
for your input. Also there was no ghost entries in DMgr.

I have moved on slightly. I disabled all the USB controllers in WinXP and
then downloaded a standard PCI USB2 driver. I restarted in Safe mode and
deleted all the controllers and ports and so on and reloaded WInXP. It
rediscovered all the controllers as it had before but it installed a PCI USB2
controller (whic didn't work!) but I re-installed the driver and it found a
82801 USB2 Enhanced controller.

All good and WinXP no longer says that I have plugged a USB2 device into a
USB1 port. I did a test though. I copied a 90Mb file over USB and it took
16 seconds. I'm not expecting miracles, but that sounds more within the
range of USB1 than 2.

I guess I just want to prove to myself that it is running faster than it did
before.

Many thanks all
Idris

Any luck fixing the problem. I have also run into a similar problem.
Recetly had a major XP problem and reinstalled XP from scratch. It now
thinks that I have USB std ports intead of 2.0. The only thing I can think
of is that when I installed XP I had a DSL modem attached to the USB port
during the install process. Not sure if modem is USB 1.0 or 2.0.

Anyway, am trying to figure out how to fix the problem.

Rick,

thanks for you assistance. Tried your suggestion and XP still only
recognises std USBs. Any other ideas?

Hi Keith,

What is the make and model of the motherboard? Are the ports an add-on card
or attached? What are you using to identify whether they are 1.0 or 2.0?

Hi Rick,

my PC is a stock standard IBM R30 laptop. When I recently attached an
external disk drive to one of the USB ports, a message was displayed
informing me to use a USB2.0 port for faster performance.

Keith

Rick,

that was my understanding as well, but why did I get the pop-up msg telling
me to attached it to a USB2.0 port for faster performance?

Keith.

Hi Keith,

Because the device is USB2 capable and is looking for that type of port.
This is normal as the unit communicates with the OS. In a desktop unit, one
might use an add-on PCI card, but it's hardly necessary.

Rick

so are you saing that in spite of the msg the device IS communicating at
USB2 speeds?

Hi,

No, the device is communicating at USB1.1 speeds and is making you aware of
its capabilities of communicating at USB2 speeds.
