Windows System Assessment Tool (WEI)

R

RScotti

I just upgraded my Video Card from a NVIDIA 7300 LE 256 MB to a PNY Technologies 7600 GS 512 MB.
Is there a way I can get the MS Windows System Assessment Tool to see how I will do?
From what I've seen I can't but want to make sure.

You would think MS would make this and the Windows Upgrade Advisor 64 Bit edition If it even exists available to XP
users.

I have a system than can run the 64 bit(I think?) but I am not going to take a chance and buy something I will have
problems with.

With a video card with the same specs on an Intel Core 2 Duo x6400 I get 4.7
and 4.8 for my graphics scores. While not the highest end scores, they're
pretty good unless you are into high end games that were written in the last
year or two. And even then, those scores would indicate reasonable
performance.

Well, I only have 2 GB of ram. So I guess I'll have to go with the x86 one. Thanks.

There isn't really a way to see what score you would get today, as there
isn't much of a db of scores. However that was the plan.

Here some info

If you have pretty new computer then you shouldn't have any problems running
x64, however unless you have 4Gb of ram there there isn't much point.

Hi Dale,
Here are my specs. I have a (Duo Core?) but it's Not the same. Yours is a lot more powerful.
I am hoping for a score from about 3.5-4.0. Since my processor is "midrange" according to CNET I don't want to upgrade
my Video card or anything else.
I have to stay with what I got until I buy a new box maybe in three years.
HP Windows XP MCE 2005
Pentium D 820 (S) DC 2.8 GHz
Socket 775 Chipset Intel 945P

PS:
I also noticed that the GeForce 7600 GT has a higher rating and is more expensive than my GeForce 7600 GS. It does have
faster memory DDR3 against my DDR2 but only half the memory 256 MB against 512 MB.

You would think the 512 MB would add something to the score?

I guess the type of memory is much more important than the size of it.
I know the clock speed is also a factor but don't know much about that.:(

I get a 4.6 and a 5.4 with an old GeForce 6600GT with 128 MB. Go figure.

You may be right about the type vs. amount of memory in the video card but
the OS seems to behave differently. I originally built my Vista box with 1
GB of 800 MHZ RAM in 2 sticks of 512 MB each and got a 4.5 for memory - my
lowest score. When I added a second gig of matching memory, my memory score
climbed to 5.6 GB. Now my 4.7 and 4.8 for graphics are my only two scores
below 5.

Yes but that is more memory of the same best kind which in this case is probably the latest type DDR/DDR2/DDR3.
depending on your finances.
The better the one you use gives a more higher score and more of that one gives an even higher score.

Your Nvidia 7300 LE would have given you WEI scores of 3.1/2.4 (give or
take). Fast enough to qualify for AERO but ...

Colin has already given you scores for the PNY card you purchased.

My new card to replace the Nvidia 7300 LE arrives tomorrow ... can hardly
wait. That card has clearly been the major bottleneck and cause of
frustration on my PC.

R

Hi,
Where did you see Colin's reply that gave me the score for my new 7600 GS?
Is it in another thread, I if so I don't see it.
Could you Please direct me to it?

There are several Colins who post in the Vista ng's. I happen to be using a
7900GT. I am getting a 5.9 for desktop performance and 5.9 for business and
gaming performance. This is on Vista x64. You should get in the fives
somewhere.

R

RScotti

Thanks for responding, Colin,
Where mine is the 7600 GS it is NOT as good as yours but if I do get in the fives that is more than I need cause my
processor will be less than that.
I have a duo core but the cheap one:
(Pentium D 820 (S) DC 2.8 GHz Socket 775 Chipset Intel 945P)
It's no way as good as the E6xxx series.I get confused on the different models.:(

My 6800GT on the test box gets about 5.2 so I'm sure you'll be happy with
the 7600GS.

R

RScotti

Hi Colin,
I'm sure I will but your 6800GT is still a higher score than my 7600 GS.
The second number x8xx tells the advancement the first number 6xxx tells the generation.
I don't know the codes for GT,GS,LE etc but the GT is a faster memory than the GS also.
Actually if I get even a 4.5 I will be happy.

I really just wish MS would release the program to us XP users.
It would be nice to know where you are BEFORE you have to buy it.

Maybe someone can persuade MS of that?

I have a 7600 GS and get 4.7 and 4.8. The newer GS (i.e. 7600) is still not
as fast as the older GT but it is fast enough for most everything.

Dale

R

RScotti

Thanks Dale,
That's because the GS is DDR2 and the GT is DDR3 memory.
Did you understand with what I said about your ram earlier in this thread?

Yes, I understood it. I have been building systems since 1986 and designed
8080/Z80 based CP/M microcomputers in the late 70's. While I don't claim to
have much more expertise in new hardware than most system builders today, I
at least understand all the concepts still. :)

Thanks,

Dale

Thanks Dale,
Well you have a lot more experience than I do. I was only a MS beta tester for Win 95 through ME.
I gave up my computer for seven years and trying to get back into it. XP has been a challenge and I am sure Vista will
be a lot more.
