Windows stopped detecting USB mass storage devices

Hi all,

My Windows XP (sp2) PC worked fine with both a Disk-on-key and a Maxtor
external USB Hard Drive.
A few days ago when I plugged the Maxtor drive, Windows failed to
detect it properly, and I got a "USB Device Not Recognized" message.
From this point both the Disk-on-key and the Maxtor HD are not
recognized.
Both work fine on another PC.
Other USB devices work fine on the PC that fails.
Checking the properties of the "Unknown Device" in Device Manager, I
can see that both the VID and the PID are 0000, meaning that Windows
fails to read the VID/PID from the devices, so it is not a problem with
device drivers or INF files.
System restore does not help
Any idea how to fix this problem?

Thanks.

Does it work in Safe Mode? Maybe a corrupt driver...

No help so far.

Any one knows which driver/fle/process is responsible for VID/PID
detection?
