Hi,

After reinstalling the adsl Alcatel SpeedTouch USB modem I am getting a
delay of well over 2.5 minutes before Windows finally settles down. Up
to installing the modem Windows would initialise without this delay.

Why does this happen, and is it fixable?

Go into "Control Panel | Network Connections", right click on the "Local
Area Network" icon and select properties. Click once on TCP/IP and select
Properties. Check "Use the following IP address". In the box for IP address
put in "10.0.0.100". In the box "Subnet mask" put "255.255.255.0". Click on
okay and click your way out. Reboot and all should be well.

You need to give Win XP a dummy address for IP, otherwise it will search for
a suitable address. Eventually it will fall through - the dummy stops this
from happening (thus no delay) and has no effect on the operation of the
network.

Kev,

I've got 4 connections:
1. 1394 connection (1394 Net Adapter)
2. Local Area Connection (Realtek RTL 8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet
NIC)
3. Local Area Connection 3 (Efficient Networks Enternet P.P.o.E
Adapter)
4. Local Area Connection 5 (Alcatel SpeedTouch(tm) USB ADSL RFC 1483 #
2)

The 2nd & 3rd have a red cross through the icon.

I applied your advise to #4, with no improvement. I set it back to
"Obtain an IP address automatically", then applied it to #3 which
looked to me like the only other logical candidate.

That fixed the delay very nicely, BUT... now I wasn't able to access
anything at all whilst online. After going offline, another look at the
Properties of #3 showed that all values were reset to 0:0:0:0.

So I'm back at square one, *with* the delay :( but I can access
everything again.

Things are getting weirder by the minute!

I re-applied your advice to the Alcatel connection (#4); boot-up delay
remained, but this time I can access everything online.

I think I need a break and a cup of 43 bean caffeine...
