Creating ISP connection ADSL

D

Dalziel

Hello

I am trying to sort an ADSL problem on a Compaq laptop running Windows XP
with SP1. The ISP is Wanadoo. The ADSL modem is an Alcatel Speedtouch 330
modem. (USB)
System properties show the usb modem to be properly set up. (2 green lights
on the modem)
But I cannot connect to the internet at all! I have followed the ISPs
instructions to the letter.
The supplied Dr. Speedtouch diagnostics software show the computer to be
okay, the modem to be okay but indicates a fault with the ISP. (Same modem
and another computer work fine with this ISP)

No connection icon shows in the My Network connections, only Lan or
high-speed internet. I cannot get it to create a new connection icon at all.
The errors I get are: error 711 and PPP disconnected. (I think this is
something to do with tcp/ip?)
Other error I get is: Could not create entry (""+speedtouch connection+"").

I have tried setting the following to automatic but no joy.
- Telephony
- Remote Access Connection Manager
- Remote Access Auto Connection Manager

Apologies for cross posting and the long winded explanation but I do not
know too much about
ADSL connections and hope I have given sufficient information to whoever is
kind enough to help.

Many thanks

Dalziel

1) You haven't cross-posted, you've multi-posted, which is very
irritating to many (including me). Suggest you learn the difference.
Cross-posting means posting to more than one group (and only two or three
pertinent groups are necessary) and indicating you are doing so by adding
their topics to the newsgroups field of your post. Multi-posting is posting
to multiple groups without putting the topics in the newsgroups field. This
is irritating a) because it means people see your post as a new post in all
groups and b) you will end up having advice repeated. This is frustrating
and annoying for all concerned - the person trying to assist you because
it's a waste of their effort and you because you're being given advice that
you may already have tried and hasn't worked. Please cross-post, and then
only because it's really necessary.

2) I have exactly the same set-up (both ISP and modem) and it works
flawlessly. Have you downloaded the latest drivers? I really don't feel this
is an XP issue (and Wanadoo TS are useless, I know).Could you describe the
exact process you're using to install? You should run the set up CD WITHOUT
THE MODEM ATTACHED and DO NOT plug it in until indicated by the installation
routine. Windows will then detect and install the PPP and networking
drivers. A new driver can be downloaded from www.speedtouch.com. You will
need the original installation CD. However, at this juncture, I would roll
back Windows to a point *BEFORE* you attempted the installation. Then do as
I suggest - run the installation BEFORE attaching the modem, and DO NOT
attach it until the routine instructs you.

3) There is just one other point - are you *SURE* your service has gone
live yet?! When I signed up it took 10 days from my instruction for the
service to go live.

Many thanks for your answer and uncalled for reprimand.

I assumed being a novice in computer matters would not be held against the
user.
I do try and learn from 'experts' like you but usually do not get admonished
so severely!
I will try and find out how it got 'multi-posted' for future reference.

However, thank you for your time and advise.
Incidentally, in answer to your third suggestion you will note from my query
that I have used the same modem on another computer at the same location
with the same ISP successfully. So I am *SURE* that my service has gone
live.

Maybe you'd like to learn how to bottom-post too. You *ARE* multi-posting.
You need to learn to /cross/-post. It wasn't a 'reprimand' and it wasn't
uncalled for. You need to learn how to post - if you don't know how to do
something, then you read up about it before doing it. Suggest you read the
sites below, and inwardly digest the information contained therein: -

What's the most irritating thing on Usenet?
Because it disrupts the way most people read
Why?

At present you are the most irritating 'thing' on the internet.

It's too bad you never say anything to many of the MVPs here (that you revere as gods) for top posting. Either it is wrong, or it isn't (IOWs, you CANNOT pick and choose for whom it is right or wrong to TP)! Why don't you give yourself a rest from attacking others that do not fit your own inconsistencies!
