Your startup sound file may be corrupted. Go to Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel. Then Click on the Sounds tab, then scroll down to 'Start Windows', and choose some other *.wav file instead of 'Windows XP Start Up.wav' (Browse) and give it a try
