No, I don't think your infected.

Boot into the Recovery Console and copy...
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\ntoskrnl.exe
to
C:\WINDOWS\system32

I got this same msg tonight on our laptop. When I stared the laptop a dell
screen came up like it was going to start then it went black and after a
while this msg came up:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows Root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Please re-install a copy of this file.

Once this msg comes up I can't do anything else.

I need better instructions on how to sign into the Recovery Console and copy
this.
I've never done this before.

Thanks for your help

Thank you for the advice... It works and I was able boot windows normally.

Except it run extremely slow once in windows and it still says SP2 when i
checked..
So I had a bright to idea to restart my laptop thinking maybe SP3 wasn't
install properly and just in middle of the reboot, I get the infamous blue
screen saying need to run "CHKDSK /F" which i found out it's "/R" not
"/F"... I think it's about time to change a new hd...

No.

By the way, chkdsk /r is stuck at 51%...

Very much sounds like your hard drive died. Time to buy a new one.

<snip>

No.

SP3 was large and likely *exposed* the failure that was hiding and waiting
to show itself. Installing software will *not* cause a full functional
(without flaws) hard disk drive to crash. It will - on many occassions -
uncover the flaws that are already there.

I put my XP CD in but can't seem to get it to run when I boot up my computer.
What Now?

Change your system BIOS (system settings) to boot from the CD drive first
and watch for the "Press any key to boot from CD"... and do ot...

BTW - if you are going to hijack a thread - at least keep your responses in
the proper placement to avoid confusion. ;-) I have included the part of
the conversation that seems to be 'your part' above.

Pure F.U.D., imho.

If done right - only those with incompatible hardware should have issues
that they cannot necessarily get around because the manufacturer of said
hardware will not support it anymore.

SP3 and IE7 are working quite well together on my Inspiron 6000. And, I
installed some post SP3 updates with no problems.

I wish I had read your instructions about 3 hours ago.
I have had blue screens for 3 days, sometimes could recover by going into
Safe Mode and going to a restore point.
Late this afternoon, restore points were reduced to a single restore point
which was from... this afternoon, and it was not restoring.
Now I have the same message as listed here "can't restart windows because
<windows
root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is corrupted!!!"
I cannot go to Safe Mode, because I get the same message when using F8 and
trying for Safe Mode..
And no matter what choice I use after F8, I get the same "Windows could not
start......\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. re-install a copy of the above file"
I do not have my Windows XP Installation disk at this location. It is in a
different country, where I will not go for another 2 months.
Any suggestions?
I would appreciate any help you might have!
Sincerely
James

You're going to have to get a bootable media from somewhere.
Then you're going to have to replace that file (and probably some
others as well). That program is the very heart of the OS and you
are lost without it.

J

jtthomas38

Okay, thank you for that. I was hoping there might be some other option.
I appreciate your help.

There is *maybe* another option, but it depends on what
you use the computer for and what resources are available
through the internet.

Your computer may have a way to restore the unit back to
factory state. If this is an option for you (considering all the
data and programs added since it left the factory may be lost
by using this method) you might have to call the manufacturer
to find out how to access this feature.

I only mention this because in some cases a business laptop
may have all data stored redundantly on the harddrive and
as offline files (perhaps on a server) where you can be back
in business when you get back to the company's network.
