windows shuts down and reboots in continuous loop.....

recently I began experiencing my computer shutting itself down, then rebooting, then shutting down, and rebooting.....all by itself, even if I am in the middle of something. It has deteriorated to the point that it just shuts down and barely gets past the black screen where I have to press some key to start in safe mode then shuts down again. Any help would be appreciated. My computer is an older AMD K6-2 450mh, with windows xp home edition operating system.

Was the system ever stable ? I have a 500 and a socket 7 board running Win
98 , but I had to forget about upgrading after finding how noncompliant the
board was to running XP. If it has run well in the past it should run well
in the future , if it isn't a hardware problem . Try to do a repair install
first and see if that fixes the problem . I am assuming that you have a XP
retail disk. Jym

Could well be a hot processor. Check your CPU fan is working.

Gilhoole, Mine is doing the same. Opened case, cleaned. Fans working fine.
Did virus and worm check. a-ok...It reset values for my administrator tools,
messed up my norton av, za firewall. It actually shut down my av and had to
get tech support to get that back. It shuts down about every 2hrs and reboots

and rebooots. I have run virus and worm scans to no avail. It got so bad it
reset values im my administrative tools, and shut down my av and changed
values in my za firewall. Had togo to tech support to get my av back and
running.Even went to the auto startup and unchecked that....It's still
shuttind down on it's own about every two hours............Please help
