Windows Security Center Strange Behavior

F

Fred 2002

My wife's computer is on our wireless home network and runs XP Home and IE
6. She uses Hotmail as her email client and asked me why she could not open
attachments from a known source. As part of my investigation, I wanted to
see if the Windows firewall was on. However, when I went to the Security
Center and tried to check the status of the firewall, I got a popup message
saying something like "Due to an unexplained problem the status of Windows
firewall cannot be displayed." Has anyone encountered this behavior before?
What do you recommend? Thanks in advance.

Do you have a Norton application installed (e.g., Norton Internet Security
2005)? Do you have a third-party firewall installed (e.g., ZoneAlarm;
Comodo)?

Troubleshooting Windows Firewall settings in Windows XP Service Pack 2

1. Start > Run > (type in) cmd > [OK]

In the Command window, type:

Netsh firewall show state

What does the result tell you?

Type EXIT to close.

2. Start> Run > (type in) cmd > [OK]

In the Command window, type:

Netsh firewall show config

What does the result tell you?

Type EXIT to close.

No Norton. Have AVG Free installed and Ad-ware and Spy Bot S&D.
