Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

I am a longtime user of Irfanview. Suddenly, I
find "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" overiding Irfanview.

Using "Search", no such program was found. When I
checked the "Paint" program index, "Windows
Picture..etc." did not appear there either.

If I cannot control the Windows Picture..etc. program,
then I want to remove it. My question is: How do I
locate the Windows and Fax Viewer application so that I
can get rid of it permanently?

If you open the folder options in control panel click on the file types tab,
scroll down to the file extension you want, such as JPG and highlight it.
Below will light up saying that jpg opens with "windows picture and fax
viewer". Click Change and pick the program you want to associate it with. Do
this for all of the JPG, JPEG, JPE, TIF ect that you don't want the windows
Picture and fax viewer and or wizard to open. Worked for me, XP home.

==================================
Go to...Start / Run....and use the following
commands to disable or enable the Picture
and Fax Viewer.

disable
regsvr32 /u shimgvw

enable
regsvr32 shimgvw

To John Inzer. Thanks so much for your solution. The
response message I got after disabling
was: "DllUnregisterServer in shimgvw succeeded," which,
I hope, means "Picture.." will no longer be a nuisance.

To CR & Mikey: Thanks for your help, but my machine was
already set up in the ways you suggested. I think you
might want to follow JI's solution just for insurance.
