picture viewer recommendations

Using WinXP. I found that Microsoft Office and Picture Manager and Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer are limited and clunky, so I installed IrfanView. I
can't get that program to save changes, however, even after downloading the
Plug-ins. I'd be grateful for recommendations for a free picture viewer that
will at the very least recognize .png files and allow me to rotate pictures
of any type and save them rotated.

Thank you!

IrfanView works fine for me. It opens PNG, rotates
an image, and I have no trouble saving the changes
to disk. It wouldn't make sense to not be able to save
such changes.

Try FastStone Image Viewer
http://www.freewarefiles.com/FastStone-Image-Viewer_program_11862.html

The name doesn't give it credit. It is a full graphics/photo editor
with lots of features built in. Pretty easy to use. It doesn't do
everything, but it does almost everything. It does what you asked
easily. I started using it years ago and I put it on all my comps.

If you're making changes, you may be really looking for an image
editor. Irfanview is mostly an image viewer, but it can do some simple
editing tasks pretty well. I think it's an excellent program, one that
I use every day.

You should be able to rotate and save a PNG, as well as any other
common format. I can. External plugins aren't necessary for PNG,
although there is the PNGOUT plugin that give you finer control over
the output. You should keep in mind that re-saving any compressed
picture file will degrade the quality (an exception being to use
Irvfanview's Lossless Rotate and Lossless Crop plugins, which I find to
be very valuable.)

If I were you, I'd troubleshoot my Irfanview problem rather than give
up this excellent utility.

IrfanView is an excellent program, and it *will* do all the things you
want to do. If you're having trouble with those things, then you must
be doing something wrong. Please be more specific about how you are
trying to do them, and exactly what happens, including the exact text
of any messages you get.

My Irfanview does those things without any problems.
I use png more than other formats nowadays.
Plug-ins are not needed.

XNView -- http://www.xnview.com/

A very capable graphic viewer and manipulator that's TWAIN compliant.

If you decide to spend a few bucks, Cerious Software's
"ThumbsPlus" does a *lot* and, IMHO, does it well.

My fault, Mayayana! I'm used to the Microsoft programs, which allow me to
rotate any number of pictures in a folder. Then, when I exit the program, it
asks if I want to save all my changes--and all I have to do is say yes. It
looks like with IrfanView, I have to save my changes for each photo--and it
takes three steps to do so:

CTRL-S
Yes, I want to save the image with the current name (or change it).
Yes, I want to replace the old file (even if I haven't made any changes).

Is there any faster way to save changes--or to save a bunch of them at once?

Thank you!

I use FastStone all the time, Jim. I didn't realize it could function well
as a photo editor, though. I'll look into it. I LOVE its ability to capture
exactly the part of the screen that I want.

Thank you, Nil! As I responded to Mayayana, it's my fault. I thought I
should exit the program as I do with Microsoft's picture viewers and I would
then get asked if I wanted to save changes. Now that I know I should do a
CTRL-S, I find IrfanView very clunky for saving changes (see my response to
Mayayana). If I can figure out how to do it easier, I'll certainly keep the
program.

Not sure why you can't save images in IrfanView. Click on File, Save; or
use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl s. Neither of these work for you?

If you want to keep a copy of the original file then File, Save As. Or use
their keyboard shortcut, hit the s key.

Thank you, JD! It's my fault for assuming IrfanView would work like
Microsoft's programs, where I was asked on exiting the program if I wanted
to save my changes. IrfanView is pretty clunky, though, on saving. It seems
to take three steps to save changes to each image.

Thank you, Ken! As I explained in responses to other posts, it's my fault. I
didn't realize I had to save each image separately. In Microsoft's programs,
I was asked on exiting the program if I wanted to save my changes--and then
all of them were saved at once. In IrfanView, though, it seems to take three
steps to save changes to each image. Is there a way to save all my changes
at once? Generally, what I'm doing is rotating a bunch of images that showed
up sideways because of the way they were taken with the camera. I'd like to
finish all the rotating in a particular folder and then save everything at
once.

Thank you, Paul! I knew that IrfanView deals with .png images (which
Microsoft's programs didn't when I tried)--but now that I know to save with
CTRL-S (see my earlier responses), saving seems very clunky. I'm hoping
there's a faster way than the three steps it takes to save each image.

I don't know of a way to make Irfan alter selected graphic files
then save all of them at once. :(

Hi Jo-Anne,

I also recommend Irfanview. It has a batch mode and can perform just about
any manipulation you like (including several different manipulations at once,
such as resize, rotate, increase contrast and rename file.)
I don't know what I'd do without it.

Use the Batch processing feature.

You're welcome. Glad to help. I doubt if there's a way to save all at
once; if there is, I don't know it.
