I am getting this message when i open some pictures, but not all pictures.

I did a little more investigation into this:

Doesn't matter the extention type
Seems to be only on files bigger than 1024 x 768
I can open them in other programs, just not in windows picture and fax viewer

Screen resiloution is set to 1280 x 1024

I got the exact same error message here. The preview thumbnail works,
but not the real image. The images used to work AND work in other
imaging software. (Even from microsoft)

This problem is much more extensive than talked about anywhere. I get it all
the time and it is not based on an error in the file at all. I will be
scanning through pictures and then it will give me the error. If I go to the
next picture and come back, the picture will be displayed. This happens all
the time with my photos and I think more frequently with higher resolution
images. It also happens every time I delete a photo from the viewer and it
tries to display the next photo. Very annoying problem and if I can't find a
resolution, I think I will try to find an alternate to Windows Viewer... in
fact I think I will go right now and see what else is available.

Try downloading a copy of IRFANVIEW. It can often not only display a picture
when the windows viewer(s) cannot, it can resave the pictures to a form that
the windows viewer(s) will accept.

I think the problem is that the picture file has become corrupted. The
thumbnail is stored at the start of the file and so often still works
when the rest of the file has become corrupted.

You say that other applications will open the file, but is the
complete image displayed correctly, or is there even a very small
problem with the very bottom of the picture.

The pciture size and screen resolution should not be important at all.

If this is the case, and it "happens all the time with my photos",
then it raises the issue of what is damaging his photos...

Thanks for the reply but I really don't think the files are corrupted. The
reason I say that is because it won't work one second and then if I go to the
next photo and come back to it, it will work all of a sudden. There is no
pattern to when it works and when it doesn't. But if I scroll through a
directory of photos, 1 of 5 will give me that error and again, if I go past
and come back, they are fine. And its definitely not a performace issue. My
machine is a Core2Duo 2.4 with 2 gigs of ram and over 30 gigs of hard drive
space so it should be able to handle this stuff with ease. To fix my problem
though I downloaded IRFANVIEW and love it. I won't go back to Windows
viewer. This one is much faster and 100x the options. Great program! I
just haven't been able to find out how to zoom with the scroll wheel. I
would still like to figure out the windows viewer problem but IRFANVIEW will
be going on all my computers and everyone elses that I know.

In case anyone wants something for the original question, it helped me a ton when I installed the latest driver for my graphic card. If you don't know how to do this post and I'll explain the procedure.

(I was implying that file damage was an unlikely explanation for
your problems.)
