Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

Recently I apparently lost the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer from my pc. I
have XP Home Ed. which came with Picture and Fax Viewer. But when I try to
open any picture or open "My Picutres" a different program is used. I tried
to search my pc for the original Picture viewer, but found nothing. Does
anyone know how to get it back?

Try this...

Right click an image file and from the menu...
choose...Properties / General tab / Change button...

On your "Open With " screen...select...
"Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" / OK / Apply / OK...

If this does not restore your viewer...try the following:

go to...Start / Run and type:

"REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.

A dialog box should report the following:

"DllRegisterServer in SHIMGVW.DLL succeeded"

I have tried both things, and although if I click on "open with", I can get
the viewer to work, it redirects me if I just click on it regularly. Is
there anyway I can get the windows picture and fax viewer set back up as my
default viewer?

Thanks.

Redirects you to what? What program do
the images open in?

OK...Try this...open an image folder and right
click one of your image files...from the menu,
select...Open With / Choose Program.

Make your choice from the list or Browse to the
correct program if it is not in the list. Once you
make your selection...be sure to check the box
that says: "Always use the selected program to
open this kind of file". (you will need to do this
for each format....jpg, .tif, .gif...etc.)

If you find out I'd like to know too. I think that Service
Pack 2 has deleted the old XP Picture viewer with the
slideshow feature and substituted Picture Editor (which is
a piece of junk).
