I have a folder containing about 85 short video clips. Windows is only
creating thumbnails for about 10 of the clips. What's wrong?

What is the file extensions of the ones it isn't creating thumbnails
for?

The file extension is WMV. I don't think that Windows can create thumbnails
for real player or quick time videos.

Try re-registering the following:

Start > Run > Type "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll" (without the quotes)

If the above command doesn't fix it, then try this one next...

regsvr32 shmedia.dll

then, this one:

regsvr32 shdocvw.dll

Actually with the right software you can. As I do with the K-Lite Mega
Codec Pack. <grin>

Thanks. It worked. I'm not sure which one worked: I tried all three, and
none seemed to work at first. But after a while, the icons reappeared.

Before the icons reappeared, I erased a video that was apparently corrupted.
I don't know if that was the cause of, or contributed to, the problem. I
also don't know whether merely erasing that video would have caused the icons
to reappear. But I'm glad to have the icons reappear.
