Windows Not Closing Programs

Hi All,
A friend of mine came to me with a problem. She is running Win
XP Home, and told me recently, when she closes programs, a small box stays
open on the task bar. There is no program name for it, and when she clicks
on it, nothing happens. After a while, she has numerous blank boxes lined up
along her task bar and the system just crawls along.

I have never heasrd of this problem before and my searches on the web have
not yielded any results, so I turn to the experts here....

Any ideas or suggestions?

Sorry I can't provide additional information, but I don't know what else
might be required to help resolve this problem.

Only the normal generic ones - does she run an (up to date) virus
checker, and a trojan/spyware remover like Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com) or spybot S&D (www.security.kolla.de)?
