Windows non responsive after internet

I have a Hp computer and just had to change the hard
drive. I got the restore disc for Xp from Hp and
reinstalled on new hard drive. But now after I visit the
internet windows becomes unresponsive and I have to
reboot the system in order for anythig to work. I tried
to go to windows update page to download any service
packs or updates that might not have been on the restore
disc from HP. but I am unable to download anything. I go
through all the steps and when it comes time to down
load. I hit the "download now" tab and nothing
happens....very frustrated called HP help line ..NO
HELP..anyone any ideas????

What else have you installed, have you reinstalled your applications,
restored your data, have you checked with HP and device manufacturer's
websites for updated drivers, what applications are installed on your system
and what versions? Have you made sure you antivirus software is up to date
and run a virus scan? Also, download (if possible), install and run Ad
