windows messenger

Everytime I open messenger I get a message to upgrade. I
cannot delete or close the icon because it says it may be
used by Outlook, explorer etc. I have tried to upgrade but
I still get the message
 
Have you tried to disable Windows Messenger from starting whenever you boot up Windows in the Preferences menu within Messenger?

or you can go to start run type in msconfig then click on
startup tab uncheck the file msmsmg. you should no longer
recieve the pop ups
