Windows messenger, how to get rid of

T

T. Duprex

Got a new Windows XP Pro system. Working my way through disabling apps in
startup or where ever appropriate. I am trying to disable Windows
messenger. I go to Messenger/tool/ options/preferences and have unchecked
everything and rebooted. Yet it still appears in the tray on start up. If
I'm in Outlook express and I try to exit messenger it says "other
applications currently using features provided by Windows Messenger. and
that I must close these other apps before you can exit Windows Messenger",
Yet I thought by going to tools/options/preferences and unchecking all the
boxes it shouldn't be running at all. What else do I have to do to shut it
down permanently?

TIA

I'd remove it completely. Modify C:\Windows\Inf\Sysoc.inf to
remove the word "Hide" from the pertinent Windows Components entries.
Be sure to leave the two surrounding commas in place. (Iow, change the
line "AccessUtil=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,accessor.inf,hide,7" to read
"AccessUtil=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,accessor.inf,,7"), and then go to Control
Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components. Windows
Messenger will now appear among the list of Windows components that can
be removed.
