How to disable windows messenger?

Windows messenger is really annoying me!!!

I have tried umpteen times to run msconfig and remove it fom the start up
list. Whenever I open Outlook Express, there it is again, despite me telling
Outlook NOT to open it!! AND it's back in the start up list!!!!

I use Messenger at work to communicate with colleagues in diffferent
buildings and I keep getting logged out when my wife turns on the PC at home.

Is there a way to tell Messenger not to connect automatically? I have
version 4.7 which doesn't seem to have that option. Do I need to upgrade
before I have more control of this beast?

Any suggestions as to how to suppress it on my home machine would be
gratefully received.

Go to Tools-Options and on the Preferences tab in Messanger, uncheck the
option that says
"Run Windows Messenger when Windows Starts". Then uncheck the option in
Outlook Express-Tools-Options for "automatically logon to Windows
messenger".

See if that does the trick...

Go to control panel---add-remove programs---on left side click add/remove
windows components---remove X from messenger.

Modify C:\Windows\Inf\Sysoc.inf to remove the word "Hide" from
the pertinent Windows Components entries. Be sure to leave the two
surrounding commas in place. (For example, change the line
"AccessUtil=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,accessor.inf,hide,7" to read
"AccessUtil=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,accessor.inf,,7"), and then go to Control
Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components. Windows
Messenger will now appear among the list of Windows components that can
be removed.
