Windows Messenger problems/New broadband connection

Just got broadband installed on my PC and now have a few
problems with Windows Messenger. I don't get notified if
a friend is logged in or if someone initiates a chat.
Also, a chatroom I used to regualrly use is now
inaccessable. The hand icon appears with an exclamation
mark beside it. Can someone help please ?
