Problems with applets and browser interactivity

I am not sure if this is an Internet Explorer issue or not, but I had a
similar situation related to this a while back, and this newsgroup was most
helpful. Any input?

Here's the problem:

I try to enter websites with chatrooms and when their messenger window
opens, nothing apears in the window. It is blank and the window has a title
of "about: blank". As it is loading, the status bar on the original browser
window (the one I entered the chat from) indicates errors on the page after I
try to enter the chatroom. When I click on the icon in the status bar to
look up the details, it says: "Class does not support automation."

I try hitting "Esc" then "Ctrl-R" to refresh the applet but nothing happens.
Is this a java issue or do I have something blocking use of chatrooms? As
far as I know, I do not have a firewall and my pop-up blocker is turned off.
I have not always had this problem...only once before did it work on this
computer, though it took a long while for the messenger to load up (even
though I'm connected with DSL), and while loading, the java coffee-cup icon
came up in the window. But that was a while back. Since then, I have had no
luck getting into any chatroom.

This could be related, but I can't even get into these newsgroups from that
computer. I am able to navigate through the tree to the newsgroup I want,
but when I click on it, it always says "not available at this time" no matter
what room I try or when. When I go to another computer I can get in the
newsgroups without a problem. Similar to the chatroom problem, only once was
I able to get into the newsgroups from that computer. Since then, the
chatrooms and newsgroups are totally inaccessible.

What gives? Any suggestions?

That is a java issue; are you running Sun's java vm or only MS Java? It
wouldn't hurt to see about updating Sun's java vm - MS' version is, for all
intentions and purposes, dead (which is a pity because it was far more
reliable, in my personal experience, than Sun's version.

Java doesn't work:

Hi Sandi...

I did everything you said and still I have the same problems. When I try to
log onto a website with a chat window, it generates an error, then opens up a
window with "about: blank" in the title bar. The error says:

"Class does not support automation"

....and it asks if I want to de-bug, but I don't know how to do that. I
think this may have to do with settings. Any suggestions? Thanks!
