Cant download updates to access chatrooms via MSN Groups

I have joined a number of groups since Microsoft in
Australia shut down the chatrooms.

I had to reinstall Windows XP and IE6, so when I tried to
access the chatrooms via these groups, I was informed
that if I could see the smiley face (the red one) then I
could proceed, if not, please wait whilst the updates are
loaded.
Waiting, waiting, waiting but still nothing.
Does anyone know how to get a copy of the updated
files/drivers/whatever it takes to get that damned smiley
face to appear?
