I have had the below problems for several days. After getting much help and
good advice from the Win 98 General discussion group I've had no success in
finding a solution so I'm turning to this group in the hopes that someone
has a solution. It initially appeared to be either a virus problem or an
IE6 problem but after trying many virus/spyware oriented "fixes" to no
avail, I now believe it may be an IE6 problem. Here are the specifics:
1) After opening any window in IE6, if I'm directed to a subsequent
hyperlink and click on it, a new window appears but with its address line
blank. If I click on "stop", the address appears, then if I click "refresh",
the window opens in the subject hyperlink address. This same behavior is
exhibited if I click on a hyperlink in an OE email message.
2) After opening any window in IE6, if I'm directed to a subsequent
hyperlink and click on it, a new window SOMETIMES appears with NO address
window. In that case, I'm essentially locked out of the URL I'm attempting
to access since there is also no "stop" nor "refresh" option.
3) When trying to use Windows Update, everything proceeds normally until I
get to the part where the download is supposed to start but nothing happens.
I've waited as long as an hour just to be sure it isn't just a late starter.
When I click on "cancel" (the only option!), I get a window that says,
"Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.
The situation is similar to 2) above -- locked out of the ability to
download files from Windows Update.
........."
Win 98se
P11, 300 MHz
320 MHz ram
IE6, OE6, SP1
AdAware
Hosts file
SpyBot S&D
Ez-trust AV
CW Shredder
I have used all of the above tools plus the IE6 repair tool, and have done a
forced IE6 reload, all to no avail. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
