Windows Messenger in SP2

Brian

I already posted here about the fact that, since installing XP Pro SP2,
Windows Messenger would not sign in automatically.
Got no response whatsoever so I decided to try downloading WM alone and
re-install it. Surprise, surprise! The WM installed with SP2 is Build
4.7.3000 but the latest version available for download alone is 4.7.2009. I
installed that and low and behold, it works perfectly.

LOL Brian -

Windows update should have asked you for a newer version of WM to install.
Somehow, you didn't get the prompt to download the latest version??!!
Is your Automatic Windows Update set to automaticly install new updates?

Well, maybe there was a glich in my SP2 install but WM did not even attempt
to sign on automatically, despite all the boxes being ticked.
If I had been able to download 4.7.3000 alone I would have done so but
4.7.2009 was all I could find and that seems to sign on automatically.

I think 4.7.3000 is the latest version so it is not surprising that Windows
Update did not prompt me. With 4.7.2009 now installed, perhaps a manual
logon to Windows Update would prompt me to update WM but I doubt it as I
think it would assume that I have the latest version with SP2. I'll give it
a try. I do get automatic update prompts anyway.

I tried and, as I expected, it only offers me 3 optional updates that I
don't need but not WM.
Presumably I would have to reinstall SP2 but I cannot be bothered to go
through that again, especially as I may end up with the same problem again.

Humm.... I just checked out my WM for a update option tab and it does not
have one. I would just run with the version you have and it should soon ask
you for a newer version of WM software to upgrade it too. When it asks you
for this could be today or 3 days from now - It will eventually ask you to do
a version update.

Any particular reason you didn't post to
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.messenger NG?

Evidently because I was not clever enough to realise there is an XP
Messenger NG.

If you do go there as suggested you'll find the latest version is 5.x.

I did go there and found out that WM 5.0 is lacking in some of the features
of MSNM and will not work with the MSNM add-in.
WM 5.0 may offer some advantages to certain business users but it seems to
me that I am better off with WM 4.7.2009 for now.
