SP2 and Windows Messenger

Here's it again. I was hoping SP2 would remove Windows Messenger and install
MSN Messenger, or at least ship an up-to-date version of WM. Instead, it
installs Windows Messenger 4.7, which is A) obsolete (the 5.0 has been out
for quite a lot of time) and B) causes lots of troubles to anyone who
installs MSN Messenger, since the two program start to fight between them
almost immediately.
Why is Microsoft not putting an end to this two-programs-for-the-same-thing
chaos it created? :-(

Hi:

I have similar situation but not as serious as yours.

But according to my knowledge learned from reading some articles before, the
two are basically different for Microsoft. Windows messenger is designed as
part of the windows platform as is assumed to be used for business purpose
initially.

MSN messenger, on the other hand, is a separate utility designed for user
across all platforms and for multiple purposes. I don't use Windows
Messenger at all, and wondering if it will be there when the next version of
Windows comes out.

But for the time being, I guess MS still holds the current positioning of
the two utilities and treat them separately. MS has been under fire for
many integrated features of Windows, and messenger happens to be one of
them.

So I guess we just have to bear with that for a bit of longer.

Yes, yes, I know how to stop it, I also know *at least* to ways to
completely remove it
I'm just wondering why it keeps getting installed... and why Windows Update
and this SP2 think the latest version is 4.7, when 5.0 has been out for a
while.

Can't answer that, sorry. I had to go through the same hassle of
removing it after SP2, but in the end it wasn't a big deal.
