Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger

luis

I had Windows Messenger 4.7 installed.
Downloaded now MSN Messenger 6.0 and installed it, but it did not replace /
upgrade Windows Messenger.... so now I have both installed and still get
the same message from Microsoft that I have to upgrade because I have an
older version installed.

In ther remove programs there is no entry for Windows Messenger....

Any tips?

thanks!

Hi Dragonteeth,

that only removes *access* to the Windows Messenger from the start Menu....
doesn't remove it.
I am probably one of the folks getting confused... it is not clear why when
upgrading Windows Messenger I am pointed to a download of MSN messenger....

Do you have both on your machine?

thanks

Greetings Luis,

1) Not to put too fine a point on it, but un-checking the "automatically
launch" option does NOT remove *access* to the program... it merely prevents
it from 'cutting in front' of MSN Messenger. You can start it manually at
your whim.

2) Yes I do have both installed. But I only use MSN Mess. The contents of
the Messenger folder is 2046Kb... not what I would characterize as a
monstrosity....) I may delete it someday.

3) I agree completely about the confusion caused by cross-linking link from
one tree: WinMess, to another: MSNMess. I have no evidence of why they did
that. It has caused many folks grief. The only plausible notion I have
come up with, is that they are trying to migrate users over to the MSN
version. To consolidate Messenger services. It does seem silly to keep
developing disparate programs for what, experienceally, are virtually the
same things.... but they should have been more explicit about the plan.
IMHO.

true but if you follow the link you go to a link to upgrade to MSN Messenger
6.0.... and that is confusing me....

It is unfortunate. When you get to that page, instead of the immediate
Download Now, you need to take the link at the left to 'Windows
Messenger for Windows XP' and download from that - it will give the
latest Windows Messenger version.

They are two independent programs - separately developed to do much the
same thing. The difference seems to be Windows Messenger as the base
facility, included with Windows, and MSN as the 'added value' one with
bells and whistles (aimed at the consumer market), much like MSN
Explorer relates to standard Internet Explorer
