* Windows Messenger 4.7 or MSN Messenger 6.2 ?

Uncle Ben

I just got Windows XP Home. Should I be using Windows Messenger 4.7
(built-in) or should I use MSN Messenger 6.2?

Should I uninstall Windows Messenger 4.7 if I install MSN Messenger 6.2?

Thanks!

Hi,

I recommend that you uninstall windows Messenger and install MSN Messenger.
Windows Messenger can be use as a security breach on your system. There
have been several posts in here describing how to fully unistall windows
Messenger.

No the installation of MSN will do the uninstalling of Windows Messenger. You don't want to uninstall that
anyway. Let MSN Messenger 6.2 take care of it if you want it. That has the ability to show a picture of the user
when connecting other than that I really don't see its benefit over Windows Messenger and in fact is more error
prone.

Hi George,

Installing MSN Messenger won`t unistall windows messenger. You have to
manually unistall windows messenger

Hi,

No problem, I still get W2K and XP mixed up a lot as well.

Jeff

It does in Windows 2000. Sorry.

Considering this is an XP newsgroup, it's natural to assume you are talking
about XP ...

Thanks George. But as far as I know, Windows Messenger 4.7 does not exist
in Windows 2000, only in Windows XP.

I would only use MSN Messenger if you would make use of the extra bells
and whistles in it. It does seem to be better in its support of video,
other than that it is mostly marketing gismos

No. Just set it not to run at windows startup, and OE not to logon to
it

That is not true. The breach you probably thought of relates to the
Messenger service, not Windows messenger, and another point is dealt
with in an updated version of Messenger - at
www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger

MSN Messenger uses essentially the same methods and is just as likely to
have vulnerabilities

I knew he\she was talking about XP. I just assumed (ass?) that the behavior was the same in XP as in Windows
2000. Not really too outlandish considering XP is NT 5.1 and 2000 is NT5. But I can tell you with
Microsoft .Net Messenger in Windows XP I have doubts you can operate them together in tandem. But who
knows - you? Do you recall what happened when Microsoft gave you the ability to have IE 5 installed in
compatibility mode with IE 4.02? That was a humdinger and they quickly scratched that idea. I never survived
for very long when done.

I have 5.0...yeah 5.0. Yes 4.7 won't install in Windows 2000. I remember when I was working with XP it wanted to upgrade Windows Messenger. When things work I usually don't want to takle the chance of an upgrade. I hate these things. It is my contention that the operating system is shipped with what works well in it and when they (Microsoft) tries to have you upgrade to something (more fun) then really what happens is not so fun. Windows Messenger in XP is pretty close to System installation. That is why it cannot easily be removed. I'm not saying it cannot be but I am saying a better alternative would be just to leave it be install your Messenger .NET and use that. No don't try to un-install Windows Messenger. The install of the .NET Messenger will make sure Windows Messenger and it can live happily ever after.

Hi there, I've just downloaded MSN messenger version 6.2.0137. It works
fine, though the thing that is annoying me is that when anyone opens up me
Messenger all they have to do is click on "sign in" and it automatically
signs into my account. How can I disable that? I have been to the "tools"
menu, "general" tab and unticked the "allow automatic sign in when connected
to the net" however still when I start up my messenger all someone has to do
is click sign in and they get into my account.
