It can be deleted but it is easier to go ahead and update
to 4.7.
Start it up and use properties / option to uncheck the
boxes for,
run at startup and run in background.
Cluse with File menu.
Check system tray and right clcik on it there if it is
still running and close.

You can clean up the start and program menu (delete
messenger if there, add MSN Messenger if wanted there)

You'll never see messenger again and the update nag will
be gone.

MSN Messenger uses Windows Messenger for certain functions, such as
whiteboard. If Windows wants you to download Windows Messenger 4.7, let
it because there is a security problem with 4.6 (the version bundled
with XP).

How do you completely disable Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger in XP Pro?
When I go to the Outlook Express folder in OE, "Messenger" (msmsgs.exe)
tries to connect to my router, using port 1900 (SSDP) and I would prefer
that it didn't do that and don't really want to let it communicate with
*anything*. I have been telling Sygate not to let it go there in the
meantime as I only go there to compact my messages. I have no use for either
program, although I must confess I don't know that much about Windows
Messenger but if it's anything like MSN Messenger, no gracias.

Thanks,

I just found out that Messenger is the same as the old MSN Messenger. I just
configured it not to start up with Windows and problem solved.
