Windows media player won't close, always reopens and interferes with anything I do

This is a rather bizarre phenomena, WMP opens automatically when I
start my computer, forces itself into the "front" of all the open
programs, and just reopens when I close it. Nothing seems to get it to
go away. Sometimes the delay is longer than others, but it ALWAYS
reopens and forces itself "on top" (meaning, if I'm typing something on
another program, windows media player will reselect itself jerking me
away from the program I was working on. )

I've run antivirus, ad-aware, spybot, and my computer seems clean.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on or what to do? my computer's
basically inoperable because windows media player steals me away from
anything I try to do. I can't even open my start menu without it
intervening.
 
I also want to add that it interferes with other media players, forcing
them to close after a second or too. I can't watch DVD's usind
intervideo's software...
