Windows Media Player 11

I have Windows XP Home and get automatic updates from Microsoft. I run VET
antivirus and also ZONEALARM both of which are regularly updated.

For some time now I have been having trouble with Windows Media Player.
Often when I play (say) an email attachment WMV file everything goes OK as
expected but then if I have another email with another WMV attachment it
will not play. Over a period of trial and error I have discovered that when
I close my computer down ( even if it is some hours after trying to use
Media Player, given up and then proceeded with other programs ) I get a
window appearing headed as " Media Sink Window". In it is says "End Program"
and a counter runs indicating something is going on. There is an "End Now"
button which, if I press, completes the process, the "Media Sink Window"
disappears and the shut down procedure continues as usual.

When I then restart the computer I can then play the wmv file that
previously I couldn't. However if there is another WMV file the whole
process starts again !!!

Can anyone help or make suggestions as what I can do next ?

If you Google Media Sink Window, there are a few forums relating to media
Player solving.
