I'm getting this error when I play a DVD.
I have just changed my DVD drive.
Before changing the drive I could play with WMP and WinDVD.
I can play a DVD using PowerDVD which came with my new drive. When I used
this for the first time it prompted me for the region. Then I tried to play
the same DVD with WMP and got the digital copyright protection error. The
Microsoft site suggests it could be a Mediatics decoder problem and I need
to use the Mediamatics player before WMP to set the region.

How do I tell if I am using a Mediamatics decoder?
AFAIK I don't have a Mediamatics player.

Regards
Robin

Trouble is Rory I don't know which DVD player was a Mediamatics player. I
only have two DVD players installed on my system: PowerDVD and WMP. Recently
uninstalled WinDVD and RealPlayer. Maybe one of those left a decoder behind.

Why is WMP using a Mediamatics DVD decoder?

It might not be anything to do with Mediamatics and the Microsoft suggestion
is taking me on a wild goose chase.

Believe it or not, I just had this problem a couple weeks ago. I foudn out
the problem wasn't what anyone thought. I had actually just downloaded the
new graphics card update for Nvidia cards from Microsoft (which they put in
Critical for some reason). Just guessing, I rolled back the graphics driver
and everything worked again. I would suggest you try rolling back the
graphics card driver.

1. Right-click "My Computer"
2. Click "Properties"
3. Click the "Hardware" tab
4. Click "Device Manager"
5. Click the plus-sign next to "Display Adapters"
6. Right-click your video card, and click "Properties"
7. Click the "Driver" tab
8. Click "Roll Back Driver"

Don't have a driver to rollback to because I haven't updated it. Thanks for
the suggestion.

I have a Radeon mobile 9000. Just updated the driver. WMP still gives the
digital copyright protection problem.

The new driver has given me a new problem! Can watch DVD using PowerDVD.
Watching video from BBC news gives flashing purple video - playing through
RealOne player (now re-installed). If I start RealOne standalone and watch a
video from the RealOne web site the video works. Then go back and select the
BBC video it works. If I role back the driver the BBC video works straight
away.

Computers who'd have 'em!
