Windows Media Player 11 will not work.

I have Windows Vista 32bit Home Premium (hate it!). When I try to open
Windows Media Player I get the error msg "The file wmploc.dll has a version
number of 11.0.6000.6344 where 11.0.6000.6324 was expected.

Windows Media Player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled.

Do you want to install the Player from the Microsoft Web Site."

I click "Yes" choose the download, and the download starts, shortly after
the installation starts...and then stops with the following error msg:

"There is a more recent version of WMP (11.0.6000.6344) already installed on
your computer. It is not possible to ue an older installation package
(11.0.5721.5146) to install files or to repair your current version"

I have tried everything from renaming the wmploc.dll file to
wmploc.bak...nope. I uninstalled, then reinstalled, then uninstalled update
KB941651 but still nothing. I'm at a loss...can anyone help?

From zachd (a Microsoft employee):

If you reboot and this still happens, please run:
unregmp2.exe /UpdateWMPVersion
from a cmd.exe prompt opened as an Administrator. (It will only work if you
open cmd.exe as an administrator.)

So, all of a sudden my media player is not working. When I try to open it,

Well, it won't let me reinstall it because apparently the version on the
website is older than the one on my computer. What the hell do I do? Help
would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!

you can do 2 things

1) Do a system restore to a time when WMP was working correctly
2) Get rid of vista and all its problems and using anything else but vista
(This is the best option of the 3)

NOTE: They changed Vista so you cannot do a repair install like it was
possible in XP
(just another stupid thing of millions in vista). See details here:
http://vistasupport.mvps.org/windows_vista_repair_options.htm

Put your Vista cd in and run sfc. You can either run sfc /scannow or sfc
/scanfile open a command prompt and type sfc /? to see your options.

Hi Cal Bear, Thanks for this but unfortunately I tried this already without
any success :( I actually went to Zach's website
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html and followed his directions to not avail also...

Hi Cheen, Unfortunately I don't know of a time to go back and do a
restore...but I liked the "get rid of Vista part"...it brings me back to the
"ME" days...and I thought I blocked those out!!!

I guess I'll just have to wait for microsoft to come out with a fix...

Hi Mike,

I did this earlier also (as administrator)...but no go. Although I didn't
run SFC with the Vista disc in the computer because we are moving soon and
it's packed somehwere in one of the many boxes!

The scan (using sfc /scannow) stopped at 3% with the msg "Windows Resource
Protection could not perform the requested operation."

Thanks for trying though!!!

You did run it from an "elevated" command prompt?

Type cmd in the Start Search box above the Start Orb, and when cmd.exe appears
at the top of the Start Menu right click on it and select "Run as
Administrator"?

Then type - unregmp2.exe /UpdateWMPVersion - in the Command window and
reboot?

do a system restore to a date very far back, see if it works then, you can
always "undo the last restoration"

What he said. If that doesn't work, if you have a MSN Messenger account,
hit me up at zachdms at hotmail dotty com tomorrow (remind me who you are,
of course) and request remote assistance. The unregmp2 fix is the correct
fix, but I have a brute-force back-up method.

Oh, not the WRP error, that's a tough one, no clear resolution for that (I'm
sure you've researched it). I assume you've tried safe mode too. Here's a
thought, perhaps SP1 will cure your ills...

Hi Everyone,

WMP is now working! Go figure! I'm not too sure why, but last thing I did
before it started working was to rename the wmploc.bak back to wmploc.dll. I
then shut down my system and walked away from it for a couple of hours. I
returned, booted the system and wella! it worked!

Thanks everyone for all your help. It was/is greatly appreciated!

Yeah, I renamed it to .bak and then back to .dll about three times...I guess
the third was the charm! Although I'm sure doing that along with all the
other steps suggested is what made it work.
