In Windows XP ,with Outlook Express wheneve, when I clicked on an email
contact link on a web page Outlook Express would automatically open to send a
message I cannot get Windows mail to do this with either Firefox or Explorer
.. I have Windows Mail set as the default mail. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Just because a program is listed as 'default' does not mean it has been
assigned all of its possible default actions or protocols. Try this:
Go to Default Programs, which you can access either from the Start menu
or via the Control Panel, then click the first item: "Set your default programs."
After a few seconds a list of programs comes up. Click on Windows Mail.
If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults" then fix it by
clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

Gary , I did what you suggested and made sure that yahoo mail had no defaults listed but windows mail still does not open when I try to send a web link using the browser. Thanks D.H.

Did you verify that Windows Mail had "all" of its defaults?
Also, Internet Explorer has to be your default browser.
