Embedded e-mail links on Web pages

This laptop came with a 60-day Office 2007 trial, which I've activated. When
I click on an embedded link on a Web page, it brings up an Outlook icon for a
few seconds and then it disappears. I can get it back on again by clicking
the link, and then the same thing happens. Now I've discovered Windows Mail,
which Microsoft says is the successor to Outlook. When I try to send a
message using it, it tells me after a couple of steps that Windows Mail no
longer supports Hotmail or other Web-based e-mail accounts. Yet Hotmail is a
Microsoft property; it's formally MSN Hotmail. And it hardly seems to be
going away. Whenever I bring up my Hotmail account, I'm advised that I have
lots more space -- up to 5GB. Does anyone know how to make embedded links, a
very handy device, work now? Please copy replies directly to me:

(e-mail address removed).

And many thanks.

Does Outlook come up normally if you launch it by itself? Windows Mail is
the successor to Outlook Express, not Outlook. Whichever email program you
decide to use, go to 'Default Programs|Set your default programs' and make
sure this program is the default and that all defaults are assigned to it.
As to Hotmail, the changes made to it a few months back rendered Windows
Mail unable to use its HTTP service; Windows Live Mail (the successor to
Windows Mail) and Outlook 2003/2007 with the Outlook Connector can use the
Hotmail HTTP service. Just recently, another change was made to Hotmail
allowing POP access so that Windows Mail and virtually any other POP client
can use it:
