Windows Mail suddenly started asking for sign on information.

My Windows mail started asking for sign on information but will not accept
the information. I am getting the below message. I have gone into "tools",
"accounts", and changed the settings without success as well as "advanced"
and clicked on the SSL boxes for both (they were initially not checked) all
without success. Help! Thanks
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'incoming.verizon.net',
Server: 'incoming.verizon.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes,
Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

You know the drill. If you would like some custom help,
right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

Please don't post a "me too" report.
If you want some custom help, post *your* error message. There
often are subtle differences not apparent to the untrained eye.

I have been on Port 110 for incoming messages and Port 25 for outgoing. I
have Vista and have been using Windows Mail for almost 2 years without this
problem. I have AVG 8.5 and have had it almost a year. Below is the message
I get when I unselect the SSL boxes. Thanks
Account: 'incoming.verizon.net', Server: 'incoming.verizon.net', Protocol:
POP3, Server Response: '-ERR [AUTH] Authentication failed', Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

That's a different error message than you got before.
At least your Windows Mail is able to talk to the server now.
Try this: Uninstall AVG 8.5, reboot, then try Windows Mail again.
If no improvement, the account has been corrupted, so delete the
account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate the account.
If that is successful, reinstall AVG, but select 'custom' install,
which then allows you to unselect installing its troublesome email
scanning module. Instead of reinstalling AVG, you can install Windows
Security Essentials, which is 100% compatible with Windows Mail:

I don't see any evidence here

that Verizon supports advanced port settings or SSL.
Please post the error message you get with SSL unselected
and using port 110 instead of port 995 for the incoming server.

Also, if you get an error with port 110, which antivirus are you running?
Some of them cause problems with Windows Mail over time.

First of all, there is no program named "Windows Express Email".
Did you mean Windows Mail? It sounds like your mail account in
Windows Mail may have been corrupted by an antivirus program.
Which antivirus are you running? Some of them cause problems with
Windows Mail over time.

One thing you should try as a possible quick fix is to delete that
corrupted mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
