windows mail stopped sending

Hi... I use Vista home premium with Windows Mail and Verizon as my ISP. About
5 days ago, windows mail stopped being able to send messages. I have no
problem receiving mail, just sending, and I have made no changes to the
settings. I use Norton, but have the outgoing email scanning turned off. I
called Verizon, and they said their outgoing mail server was working fine. I
get the following message when I try to send and email...

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Subject 'Re: The endless paper', Account: 'Verizon Email',
Server: 'outgoing.verizon.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No,
Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

thanks... mike

Hi Mike,

I have the same issue with my computer and was wondering if you ever found a
solution to the problem. My next option is to call HP, because I've only
owned the computer for 3 months and they should fix it for free (I'm told) by
Microsoft.
My regular email address is (e-mail address removed). If you have any
helpful information....I would LOVE to know about it. I will also let you
know if I find anything out.

Thank you,
Rosemarie

You might check your Verizon settings under Windows Mail:

http://netservices.verizon.net/portal/link/help/selection

http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1434415&page=1

Also, some versions of the Norton software need to be uninstalled,
not just partly disabled, to stop them from causing problems. You may
then need to run this addition to the uninstaller to do more cleanup:

<http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039>

You may then need to remove the email account under Windows
Mail, then create it again, to get rid of the problems caused by
the Norton software.

If mail is piling up in your Outbox, and you can't delete the oldest
message there, you may need to download and install this fix,
with Windows Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit version or the
64-bit version, try the 32-bit version first.

I checked my settings with Verizon and they are all appropriate. I have not
made any recent changes to Norton, so I don't think that's a problem. I'm
convinced that Windows Mail has somehow become corrupted.

First, we need to know if you are trying to send from a laptop
while away from home. That can be a cause for this symptom.

Secondly, antivirus-related issues often take time to develop.
I can assure you we have been through this thousands of times here.
It won't hurt to uninstall Norton temporarily, to see if that fixes the
sending problem. If no improvement is noted you can always reinstall
Norton.

I am running windows mail from a desktop at home directly plugged into my
router.

I uninstalled Norton antivirus and still receive the same error message and
am unable to send mail. Do you know if there is a way to uninstall and
reinstall windows mail?

Since Norton may have corrupted that mail account, delete the
account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate the account.

Also since Norton may have left remnants behind, you should
also use the Norton cleanup tool mentioned below:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

You can't reinstall Windows Mail, but there are two other procedures
which may help. They are rather elaborate:

1) Reset Windows Mail: see
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/62560-windows-mail-problems.html
and scroll down to the section "How to Backup and Reset Windows Mail"
This will correct any data-related corruption.

2) To correct non-data corruption, do a Vista repair-install, see
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

However, if it was me, I would simply upgrade to the newer
Windows Live Mail program: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview
