Windows Mail - Not sending or Receiving

M

Matt

I have read most of the recent posts here regarding not being able to send or
receive email with Windows Mail. I now have the same problem (it is recent).
I am looking for any help. Here are the details:

- Verizon is my ISP
- I am using Vista 64
- Norton is my A/V
- I downloaded Windows Live and tried that as well.. still not working

- Here are my email settings:

Incoming mail (POP3): incoming.verizon.net
Outgoing mail (SMTP): outgoing.verizon.net

I have logon with secure authentication checked and outgoing server
requiring authentication checked.

on the Advanced tab I have tried with both the SSL boxes checked and
unchecked.

Here are the errors:

Account: Server: 'incoming.verizon.net', Protocol: POP3, Server Response:
'-ERR invalid command', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90,
Error Number: 0x800CCC18

Windows Live Error:

The connection to the server has failed.

Subject 'Test Message from Windows live '
Server: 'outgoing.verizon.net'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 25
Secure(SSL): Yes
Socket Error: 10061

I am trying to access mail from remote locations and not from my home
connection (hence not using a Verizon connection). That is when the problem
originally started (at first I was able to receive and not send, now I am not
able to do either). I am not able to test from my home at this time.

The only other action I have not tried based on the post's and suggestions
is to completely uninstall Norton (I did turn off email scanning)

Any other thoughts / help? I really don't like using Verizon's web email
interface and would prefer to have my Windows Mail or Windows Live working.

Any help is appreciated.. thanks!

In Windows Mail, go to Tools, Accounts, select that mail account, Properties,
Servers. Uncheck the box for "Log on using Secure Password Authentication."
That should restore your ability to receive.

For the Windows Live Mail send error:
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Advanced,
then uncheck the SSL option.

When away from home you may run into connection providers who block
port 25, but let's get your other issues squared away first.

Thanks much.. Windows Mail is now able to receive after uncheck "Log on using
Secure Password Authentication."

However, I am still unable to send with either Windows Mail or WLM. .new WLM
error:

The connection to the server has failed.

Subject 'Test Message from Windows live '
Server: 'outgoing.verizon.net'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 25
Secure(SSL): No
Socket Error: 10061

The send failure you are seeing now is due to the port 25 block I alluded to
earlier. As a general rule, the owner of the SMTP server you are using must
be the same as the provider of your Internet connection at that moment.
For more on this issue see
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

The available workarounds when sending away from home are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask your home ISP if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP.
3. If you use the same away-from-home connection frequently,
substitute the SMTP server belonging to that connection. This is a bit
tricky, but if you want to go that route, I can provide more details.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account,
configure it for POP access, set it up in Windows Mail, and use that for
your sending chores. Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked
like port 25 is.

Thank you. All is well now. I found the alt SMTP port for my home ISP, made
the change, and can now send from Windows Mail.

Thanks again, you have been a great help.
