Cant send mail. Tried everything I'm lost here

I have everything set up like Verizon tells me to. I can receive emails but
not send. I use outlook and Vista 64

Heres the message.

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject 'Re: Server',
Account: 'incoming.verizon.net', Server: 'outgoing.verizon.net', Protocol:
SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 Authentication Required', Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

What AV software are you using? Disable any real time mail checking
features. If it's Norton or McAfee, they are notorious for causing mail
issues.

I have no AV on this comp. Could it be windows defender? If so, what settings
need to be changed?

You use "outlook"? I'm assuming you mean Windows Mail.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that mail account, Properties, Servers.
Put a check in the box for "My server requires authentication".

Gary--I have the exact same problem as DoDaMan, and have tried your solution,
but I still get the same error message in regards to a specifc e-mail
address. Can you elaborate?
