Windows Mail Slow

W

...winston

Similar to a few others reporting slowness in creating messages in Windows
Mail, I also see this delay in loading/displaying/replying to newsgroup
messages. It does not matter whether the email or news messages have been
read or reread.
The delay is about 5-10 seconds. It does not occur all the time.

It is common to all configured news servers.
It does occur in either a standard or admin mode.
The presence of the router or a direct connect to the cable modem does not
make a difference.

The usual 'tweaks' don't seem to have an impact(e.g. compact, reset, empty
tif, cleanup, defrag. Nor does disabling the resident security
applications - AV(Avast), Firewall(Windows), malware (Defender)], UAC or
Windows Updates.

Same problem on two separate machines, both with Windows Ultimate(one in
dual boot, the other the only o/s).

All other installed applications run without any delays whatsoever
including, IE7, Outlook 03 and 07 in all forms of use in a multitasking
environment with or without Windows Mail open and inherent Windows mail
slowness.

A view in task manager performance shows Windows Mail spiking at 90-95% CPU
usage for the duration of the delay when it does occur. When this 'slowness'
does not occur, cpu peaks no higher than 10-15% but drops off to marginal
numbers almost immediately. Physical Ram is stable regardless of the
occurrence at approx 20% of the total 2GB, The page file usage is less than
than 1/5 of the total Windows managed and created size.

As near as I can tell it is only unique to Windows Mail

As always any discussion or suggestions are always welcome.

Gary,
Thanks' for responding.
Contacts ? In Windows Mail about two dozen. Outlook 07 is my default mail
application. It has 63.

If your thinking of the address book auto complete address when composing
option..I thought that might be an issue even if the quantity of contacts
was minimal, and disabled that feature..no impact.
Though, that shouldn't be at play when clicking on a newsgroup message for
opening in a separate Window or preview pane or already read and cached.

Hey, Winston.

I've been experiencing this same problem for awhile now.
Like you, I've tried numerous things, but the problem continues.
However, the delay problem disappears after having WinMail
open for awhile. If I close WinMail and then open back up,
the delay is there again.

I also use Outlook 2007 as my default email client on this
laptop. I was using Outlook 2003, just recently decided I
like Office 2007 enough to use it full-time.

If you get any ideas or figure it out, please reply to the
newsgroup and let us know.

Thanks.

So the slowness you're experiencing cannot be blamed on an excessive
number of contacts in the Contacts list. I have no idea what could be
causing that slowness problem. I can't duplicate the issue.

I have 1460 contacts and I see slowness in the following situations:
1. Clicking the toolbar "check names" button or sending an email without
having clicked "check names".
2. Opening the Contacts folder and trying to sort on last names.

I don't see Windows Mail as being any slower on newsgroups; the only
newsgroup problem I have is the known issue about needing to scroll up to
see the newest message if there are a lot of new messages.

Thanks Michael.

Agreed..If Windows Mail is open for some period of time, the delay
eventually disappears.

Will you try something at my request ?

The next time you open Windows Mail and prior to accessing anything else
type Control Shift L to open the Calendar, then close it. See if it improves
the situation.

Hello Steve...
You're welcome.
It's always nice to hear from you.

Opening the Windows Mail Calendar(WM\Tools\Calendar or Ctrl-Shift-L) then
closing it seems to eliminate the delay on these two machines..waiting for
other people to test it...lol..or it could be a wild goose chase
coincidence.

If it is related, not sure why...could be a handshaking or background
process. Very few user configurable options are available, let alone any
that seem to directly tell these apps to communicate, unless they are found
elsewhere in Vista(I've not looked yet) instead of WM or the Windows
Calendar.

-----------------------------------------

One other good thing- WinMail was constantly jumping up to over
100,000K memory usage. Now, it peaks at about 27,000K and
falls back, depending on what I'm doing. Makes absolutely no sense
to me, be there is obviously some correlation. We both know what we've
seen. Why this only happens to some users is a mystery to me.
Windows Calendar affecting the performance of WinMail, especially the
compose/reply windows, is strange. Some type of interaction between
the two that I am not aware of. Who knows?

Have a great weekend, Winston.

Bizarre is right. Another person in another forum also validated it. I

I'm going to have to take back what I said about
Windows Mail using less memory. When in the
vista.general group, WinMail still jumps to over 100,000K.
In the vista.mail newsgroup, memory usage drops to
about 35,000K. Obviously, the newsgroups in which you
have downloaded a lot of posts, will be the ones that cause
memory consumption to jump.
