Windows Mail Severe Performance Slowdown

G

GTS

Suddenly today the Windows mail program (which I use only as a news reader)
is acting up. When clicking on a message there is a long pause before it
is displayed. (This is true of all news accounts.) Sometimes the message
shows, the preview pane goes blank, and then it redisplays. The problem is
the same in the preview pane or if opening fully. This is NOT a connection
issue. It applies to previously downloaded messages. I forced a compact
cycle and did a reboot - no help.
I suspect this may have something to do with yesterdays security update and
wondered if anyone has had this problem or has any other ideas. Thanks.

Uninstall the update "Cumulative Security Update Internet Explorer 7" (KB931768).

Thanks. That was my suspicion too. Uninstalling it does fix the problem.

I removed the update mentioned, but it still takes 1-2 minutes to connect to
the mail server and download any mail. Two days ago it did this in under 5
seconds. Any further suggestions?

What is the date of that particular update?

I just tried to remove it and found that I don't have it installed. I do all
the installs automatically and I have 13 updates between 2/25/2007 and
4/11/2007. I'm surprised I have not had an automatic update in a week.
I'll go check now. Nope, it tells me Windows is up to date and the last
check was today.

Wondering,

Tom

08/05/2007 is the date of the fix but it was installed, for me,
at 3am gmt 09/05/07

note. KBs931906 & 905866 were also installed on the same occasion.

Removing KB931768 did the trick for me, but I agree that it is not quite as
fast as it used to be.

You may notice that I posted twice. The first posting does not include the
KB number.

That brings me to another problem I have with Mail.

If I open something in the Outbox to EDIT it, when I SEND it again, it does
not delete the original version and I sometimes end up sending two similar
emails unless I go into the Outbox and delete all but the last edition of an
email.

Whazzupwithat?

Tom

P.S. To prove it, I will send this to the outbox and then open it and add a
few words and then click on Send again.

See, I told you so.

Although some claim this is a bug, I believe that the designers
felt that a message once sent to the outbox is not meant to be
retrieved and re-edited. After all, most users configure their
email client for immediate send, so a re-edit is not even possible.

Gary,

Well, different strokes for different folks. I long ago changed that
particular setting when I got tired of reviewing Sent messages and thinking
"Rats, I wish I'd said .... " or finding embarassing typos. I don't want to
be argumentative but I'm not sure your statement that "most users configure
.... immediate send" is accurate.

In my book it's a bug that didn't exist in any previous versions of OE.

While the update KB931768 messed up Windows Mail, it also corrupted McAfee
SecurityCenter. Once I had uninstalled the update then uninstalled McAfee
SecurityCenter and reinstalled it, everything was back to normal. However, I
still have the taskbar icon saying I have a new update to install, the
KB931768 update that messed everything up. Is there a way to inactivate the
alert icon just for this particular update? Also, how do we get Microsoft to
fix this update so it provides the necessary security without messing
everything up?

I don't have the answer for you, but you're more likely to get that
question answered in the Windows Update newsgroup.

You should always disable antivirus software prior to installing an update.
