Windows Mail Import Problem

J

John Chan

My Windows Vista Business has been corrupted and I need to re-install the
windows.

I have backup the e-mail by exporting the e-mail to an external harddrive.

After re-installing the windows, I import those e-mail again and the whole
process is smooth.

However, when I viewed the e-mails in the pre-view pane. Some of the
sub-folders are having problems. In those problemed sub-folders, I can see
the e-mail subject, date/time, size correctly. When I clicked into the
e-mail, all of the content in the e-mail under the same sub-folder is the
same.

My mailbox is very big which is 30G and there are many many folders (over
5000 folders/sub-foldrs). It seemed that Windows mail is having problem to
handle such a large scale folder arrangement.

Please advise how can I solve the problems as those e-mail are important. I
cannot lose them.

Thanks!

This is not meant as a response to your current problem, only a
recommendation for avoiding future trouble.
I would be very leery of using any of Microsoft's free email clients for
a massive email store of some 30GB. The free clients like Windows Mail
are only meant for casual, light duty use. For heavy duty applications,
Outlook is a better fit.

Windows Mail often has problems writing to or reading from an external
drive. It may help to first copy the backup to a directory on the main hard
drive of your computer, then import then from there.

If I go to the specified folder in the back up, I can still read the e-mail
by double clicking on them. But when I imported them, they are all belonged
to the same content. I can use Outlook in the future, but can you advise how
can I get back those e-mails?

Sorry, I'm out of ideas.

Install Outlook, and have it import from the backup.
We do have a few Outlook experts monitoring this newsgroup,
so I'm sure they can fine-tune my advice (I'm not an Outlook expert).
