Windows Mail and Outlook

I would like to know if Windows Mail and Outlook can be on the same PC (Vista
premium) and work totally independant

They can be on Vista together, but I don't believe they will be totally
independent.
 
For example Default Mail Client being the one used to reply to a IE link?

So Windows Mail and Outlook will not combine contacts?
 
Why do you want to use them independently? Can you give examples on how you
want to use each program?
 
2 users, myself and my wife. We want to keep some privacy and not mix up our
contacts therefore 2 email programs. We just got a new pc with Vista,
previously running XP with Outlook and Thunderbird as emails, but Thunderbird
is having problems with Vista.

We don't want to create 2 user accounts to access our computer since we use
the same other files in other apps.
 
You can do this to some extent with Windows Live Mail (WLM).
If you and your spouse login to WLM with different 'Live' IDs,
your contacts will be separate. Also, WLM keeps mail from
different accounts in separate folders.
