Windows Login

I`ve installed Win XP Pro on wife`s computer. On startup I get the "Log
on to Windows" window. She`s the only user and doesn`t need password
entry. She just clicks the OK box to enter. How do I get rid of that
window and go directly into startup? TIA

Start | Run, type "control userpasswords2" Select the account you want to
logon to automatically. Then uncheck the box "Users must enter a user name
and password to use this computer."

Or do the same thing with TweakUI.

Looked up the above url which contains item from other post which I
tried first. Couldn`t get that to work since I guess computer is part of
a domain. Tried that fix and got to where I double clicked "DefaultUser
Name entry. The box came up to type username and cursor blinked but I
was unable to type anything. Don`t know what I`m doing wrong.

If you "guess computer is part of a domain", then it's a corporate
computer/notebook rather than "wife's computer". In that case, you
should leave it alone.

It`s definitely no corporate computer . It`s one I built myself (I`m
retired and so is she) and my "guess" is that I put in that is was part
of a domain as I must have confused that with a local network
(workgroup)which I have. Anyway there is a domain name in there and I
wouldn`t know how to get that out . When the log on window comes up it
comes up as "Administrator' and asks for a password. I usually start it
up for her and just click OK and it starts. I don`t enter any password.
If I try to put anything else either in the user name or password it
won`t accept it and I have to put in Administrator and no password and
hit OK. Seems like alot of trouble to go thru just to log on. My
computer has XP Home and I`ve never (that I remember) had this problem.

Install TweakUI and try this way:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

TweakUI > Logon > Autologon > Log on automatically at system startup >
Apply > OK.
I had already done that. It resulted in another step at startup. That
step is a window that says "The system could not log you on. Make sure
User name and domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters
in passwords must be typed using the correct case." I have to X out of
that to get to the old familiar login that has "Administrator", put in
no password and click OK to get started. The whole problem I`m sure came
about when I formatted the new harddrive with Windows CD. When asked if
I was on a domain I said yes thinking "domain" meant a network. (Only
here did I learn they weren`t the same thing.) I`ve tried to change
things so many times that I`m now not sure what I used (casewise or
otherwise) in assigning the domain name. I had never put in a password
until I started trying to get rid of the origional Logon screen. I`m
also not sure of the user name as the first one I put in was one on her
old computer and when I hooked up the new computer on the netwok it said
I would have to rename one computer (I did the new one). In short I`ve
really messed things up . If I tried a new install would it give me the
opportunity to correct these mistakes or are they in the registry
permanently?

Well, create another account for your wife. If there are no problems,
remove the existing user account.

Thanks, a simple solution for what I thought was a serious problem. The
log on is gone!Thanks again.
