Recently purchased a new PC. Put the CD for my Norton Anti-Virus s/w in to
install it. Windows detected the Norton Internet Security that came on the
PC and would not install my s/w - told me uninstall the Norton it had
detected.

I decided to use the Internet Security for the trial period to try it out.
However, every time I boot up, I get a WINDOWS INSTALLER error - it says it
is Preparing to Install - then it says NORTON ANTIVIRUS DOES NOT SUPPORT
Repair - Uninstall and Reinstall.

Another reason not to use Norton. Try doing a System Restore to before
you tried to install your own NAV. If that doesn't work, contact
Symantec tech support for help with their products:

Having Norton Internet Security running successfully on three laptops, I am
interested to see your negative approach. I would like to know what you find
bad about it. Also what program you find to be better. Incidentally, as
Windows XP always recognises Norton, why not consider that there might be
something wrong with his Windows program? That is, of course "just my
opinion, Man".

Spending tons of hours cleaning up completely updated PCs with Norton
Internet Security on them could be part of it. It's the same senario every
time. Someone buys a new PC with Norton on it (the full version not the trial
version). Within a month or two the PC gets attacked by trojans that Norton
cannot remove. The user has to call Dell, HP, etc to find out what to do to
get rid of viruses, trojans, etc. that Norton found but cannot remove.
Without fail, the user is guided through a reinstallation, losing all their
data. The next month, the same exact thing happens.

I just did a clean install on a PC on Thursday for one of my managers. I
updated XP Pro, Norton, Spybot, SpywareBlaster, Microsoft AntiSpyware, etc.
Today the user told me that Norton found a trojan and was unable to
quarantine or remove it. So now it just has to sit there until there are so
many unremovable trojans that the PC needs to be rebuilt again. I have seen
this many times. Of course, you may not have these problems mentioned but
every Norton user I know has constant problems and eventually switches to
another brand of protection.

We use Symantec Corporate AV on our network and it is nothing but problems.
Constant attacks. Its always a crisis for two weeks after a virus is
released. I forgot to mention trying to get a disabled Norton/Symantec
product off of an attacked PC. Good luck trying to remove it or LiveUpdate
even with their uninstaller. I've never seen so many error messages.

McAfee may have some issues but I never get viruses, trojans or other
attacks on my home PC. And yes, obviously XP has more holes in it than swiss
cheese but if McAfee prevents attacks and from my experience Norton does not,
I'll stick with McAfee until that changes.

Thank you for your very full explanation. I use Norton's Intelligent Updater
on my computers on a daily basis. Since doing this there have not been any
successful attacks on any of my machines.
