Windows Installer problems (Error 1500 - other installation is in progress)

Nutshell

Hi all!

When trying to add/remove windows components I get the error message "An
other installation is in progress" (Error 1500).

I can't install or uninstall any programs using the Windows Installer. It
just stops, and from the Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs I can't alter
Windows Components (other installation is in progress error is displayed).

The first sign of trouble came when trying to install the .NET Framework
2.0. It failed, because it could not stop the IIS and MSSQLservices. Just
before that I've upgraded XP to SP 2 without any errors.

I've found the Installer Cleanup Utility, however the installation of this
depends on the Window Installer, so I'm stuck.

Any tip is welcome!

try ending all instances of process - msiexec.exe and then try add/remove
components. if this still doen't work try repairing the windows installer
