Windows Installer is not working

I'm trying to upgrade to Microsoft Office XP, and when I
put the CD in, I get an error message "The Windows
Installer service could not be accessed. This can occur
if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows
Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your
support personnel for assistance." There is not CD, the
software came pre-installed. Any suggestions?
