With the Windows Update... installed you could try to update the object in
the Download Program files folder in Windows directory by right-click |
Update or delete it & download again via Windows Update. I don't think will
work unless the genuine tool is now working. Plus check for:

Windows Update folder is empty.
Automatic Updates (C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k wugroup)

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k
BITSgroup)

Unable to open these files.

Bobby,

Those locations in brackets were obtained my clicking on the associated
service etc.

If you go to services then double-click the Background Intelligent Transfer
Sercice you will see the 'Path to executable' that should like what I
already posted. The same would be for the Automatic Updates service

I did a "repair" with my Win XP CD, and all of my problems are fixed.
When I went to Windows upgrade I found that I was 59 upgrades behind, plus
SP 2.
I think I'll check for upgrades manually even though I have my compter set
for automatic upgrades.
Anyway, thank you all who offered suggestions. I appreciate your help.

Install SP2 first. Then after that you'll have another 70-80 updates to go.
No need to install anything before SP2. Also you could have created an XP
installation CD slipstreamed with SP2, then did the XP repair install with
that. Autostreamer makes the creation of the slipstreamed CD easier.
