Windows Indexing Service?

Hi,

I want to use the Windows XP Search utility to search one particular folder
for files that contain "a word or phrase in the file." I have done this many
times.

Now, for some reason when I try to do this, I get a message saying "The
indexing service query cannot be completed because the volumes you have
specified are not indexed."

If I go into properties for the folder and click "Advanced" on the "General"
tab, the checkbox for "For fast searching, allow indexing service to index
this folder" is checked.

As I don't do these types of searches every day, I am not sure exactly when
this stopped working. I did not (knowingly) change any settings having to do
with the indexing service.

If anyone can tell me why this might be happening, I would greatly
appreciate it.

Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,

Check to see if the Indexing Service is started.

Go to Start - Run and past the following command then press enter.

cmd /k net start

Does the Indexing Service show up on the list?

Hi Bert,

That was the problem. I changed the indexing service to start automatically
and now I can do my search.

I just have one other question. What if I want to search for a string such
as #38? When I try to search for this, I get a message saying "One or more
Indexing Service query parameters are incorrect." I am guessing that the #
sign has some kind of special meaning, but what if I want to include it
literally in my search?

Thanks again,
Paul

Hi Paul,

I am not familiar with this problem but would suggest eliminating the # in the
search.
