Windows: Genuine Advantage & Product Activation

Guest

Hello,

I have a problem related to Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) and Windows
Product Activation (WPA). I use an OEM license type of Windows XP Home
Edition with SP2.

Recently I enabled the guest user account on my computer. The guest account
is actually the guest user account which it’s turned off by default in
Windows XP. Every time I logged on to that account a pop-up balloon informed
me that I might be a victim of software counterfeiting and my copy of Windows
is not genuine. When I logged off from the guest account I was notified again
on the welcome screen that Windows is not genuine. Further more, when I
logged on to my other user account with administrative privileges a dialog
box informed me again that my copy of Windows is not genuine and I had to
wait a few seconds before continuing.

On the other hand when I logged on to my administrator account just after
Windows was loaded, I didn't receive any notifications neither on the welcome
screen nor in the notification area from the taskbar.

I went to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine and I successfully validated my
copy of Windows, but after logging on the guest account the Windows Genuine
notifications popped-up again. So my guess is that Windows Genuine
notifications were triggered every time I used the guest user account.

There is an entire section with this kind of issues related to WGA available
at http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine and I already requested help there.

Using a third-party tool I managed to obtain the product key for my copy of
Windows and I was surprised to find out it didn't match the product key from
the COA.

Product Key found with third-party tool: *****-*****-*****-2CXKV-GMP22-HF2BQ
Product Key from the COA: *****-*****-*****-*****-*****-B4VHD

I used KeyUpdateTool available at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink...nkId=50346&clcid=0x409 to change the product
key and now I see myself in the situation of dealing with Windows Product
Activation. The activation notifications are displayed on the welcome screen
as well as in the notification area from the taskbar in every user account.
So I'm prompted to activate my Windows copy or else in less than 30 days it
will lock up.

I already tried unsuccessfully to activate my copy of Windows over the
Internet and this concerns me. Windows was pre-installed on my HP notebook
and despite the fact I performed clean installs of Windows, I never had to
activate it. I am aware that for OEM license type activation is not required.

Because Windows was already installed on my computer when I purchased it, I
have contacted my computer manufacturer, but they couldn’t assist me in this
matter. Below is the reply from a HP support specialist. Not very useful I’m
afraid.

<< This is not an issue with HP. We are getting lot of issues regarding the
same. Even though you have a genuine version of windows XP with a valid
product key, you may receive the error Windows activation while updating
windows. Microsoft has to release a patch for this.

Please refer the following link for more information:

http://www.microsoft.com/techn.../evaluate/xpactiv.mspx

http://support.microsoft.com/d...x?scid=kb;en-us;307890 >>

Reinstalling Windows in order to eventually solve this problem is my last
option. I can provide further information, if necessary. I will appreciate if
anyone could kindly help me. Thank you.

Don't bother. Even Microsoft base security Analyzer says it's a security
risk. Create a Limited User account and call it "Visitor" or something
similar.

Please visit http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine and you'll get an answer
in that forum.

Um, what you quoted is what you suggest the OP do, which the OP has
already done. How unhelpful is that?

Gosh, fanboy, how does this case of a false positive benefit the paying
customer? So far, the OP, who obviously has a legit copy of XP, has had
to waste hours of his or her time for what, pray tell?

Alias, not expecting the fanboy to reply.

I have trouble finding my thread regarding WGA and WPA at

Of course you did. It's part of the plan. The forum is hard to navigate
on purpose. They also censor people who point out the truth about the
WGA/N spyware. Of course, it they were to put the forum on Usenet, they
would run the risk that posts can't be censored and posters can't be banned.
Isn’t it public anymore?

You have to sign in with a Passport or Hotmail account. Watch out,
though, if you scream too much about it being unfair, your posts will be
pulled and the next time you go there, you will be greeted with a
"you're not welcome here" web page.

Like your first reply in this thread has been pulled I see - now I dont see
it.
What is a real pizz off for me is that your posts get the blue pencil
treatment and in the last week or so, there have been a high number of
spammers. Why dont these threads get pulled.

They are being put through the mangle for the second time it would appear.
Any decent company would have sent the customer a new product.

I think it was because I used the term "fanb0y" but written correctly. I
have since reposted it, cleaned up. We will see if it sticks.

Good question. They obviously, unlike me, aren't paying customers of
Microsoft.

Hi Alias
Have you looked closely at that web link given to the OP - am I missing
something - has somebody clipped to confuse - has there been a time shift -
the link shows the post from Flavius at 3.59pm UTC on 6 August - he was
advised to go there having already said he had been there, in the OP's first
post in this group, dated for me 8 August @ 14.04 - which I think you point
out above.
Who was the first to reply at 4.25pm UTC on 6 August??????? in the web
discussion group, two days before the OP got the first reply, here
in this thread.
I am still trying to figure this out.

Hi I am having a problem with my activation of windows xp professional.
Recently the computer completly wiped itself due to a virus, after removing
the virus I was asked to reinstall windows so I thought no problem and took
out my windows CD and begun installing it. I entered the product key and then
after everything was installed I logged on. I then got the message activate
within 30 days so I tried to actiavte it and it asked me for the product key,
I re-entered the same product key I had used to install windows onto my pc in
the first place and receieved the error message unauthorized product key
please use another by this time I was like wtf?! I tried to email microsoft
but they wanted to charge me for email support, I then tried phoning them and
receieved no help at all so now I am stuck as my windows activation is almost
up in 6 days and then I won't be able to acsess all of my work so I need help
and I don't understand why i should ahve to pay an additional £95 to get a
new license when the one I have should be fine.

Reasons I think why it doesn't work anymore

1. The PC had to have a new motherboard installed and the repair guy
re-installed windows using his disk and then my computer crashed and
formatted itself so I reinstalled windows using my copy.

2. Microsoft just want to make more money from me

thats all I can think of

I will really appreciate any feedback

thanks

Microsoft doesn't think your key is valid. You have to spin a yarn
better than the one you tell here to overcome that, evidently. Have
you considered confronting the repairman? Did you post in the forum
Sengupta recommended? Usually computers do not format themselves.

You should back up the stuff you want to save, reinstall Windows,
then put the saved stuff back in to give yourself 30 more days. Then
straighten out your story to make it good enough to hold on to the £95.

I am not sure what happened but if a virus wiped your system clean... What
asked you to re-install Windows??? This should have been a flare that
something was still ary. Do yourself a favor Format the system yourself and
re-install windows. It sounds like maybe the virus was actually a trojan
that stole your product key and sent it to someone else for their usage...
